A new artificial diet for the early weaning of seabass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) larvae OMA
Devresse, B.; Candreva, P.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The weaning of marine fish larvae is a critical step in larval rearing. The successful transition from live food to an artificial feed depends among others on the quality of the dry feed used (e.g. freshness of ingredients, digestibility, quality of the formulation) and the larvae themselves (e.g. age, behaviour towards artificial diets, development of the digestive tract, efficiency of certain metabolic pathways). The present study shows the results obtained with a new artificial diet formulated for the weaning phase of marine fish larvae (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) in commercial hatcheries.

A simple way of avoiding feed wastage in European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, under self-feeding conditions ArchiMer
Coves, Denis; Gasset, Eric; Lemarie, Gilles; Dutto, Gilbert.
Self-feeding systems allow fish to freely express feeding activity. A simple rod at the water surface can act as a trigger and provide fish with a way of obtaining pellets from a feeder. Such a rod presented to experienced European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, may lead to feed wastage, probably as a result of unintentional fish contacts with the trigger. Trigger protection screens have been designed to prevent fish contacting the trigger by chance, and the efficacy of such screens was tested. Nocturnal and diurnal feed delivery and feed wasted were compared under conditions where the rod was unprotected or protected by semi-cylindrical or cylindrical screens. Tests were conducted using an unrestricted self-feeding regime (reward: 0.2 g pellet per kg of...

An oral challenge for turbot larvae with <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> OMA
Chair, M.; Dehasque, M.; Van Poucke, S.; Nelis, H.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
There is a need for a standard in vitro procedure to infect larval fish with bacteria. Such a procedure could be used as a tool to evaluate fish quality, verify fish sensitivity to a certain bacterial strain or evaluate the pathogenicity of a bacterium towards a given fish species. The availability of a challenge test is a prerequisite in studies dealing with the effect of different medicinal treatments on diseased fish. An oral challenge test would offer the possibility to investigate the routes of infection via the digestive tract, i.e. after feeding contaminated feeds. The present study aims to verify this hypothesis and proposes a standard challenge procedure for turbot (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i>) larvae with a pathogenic <i>Vibrio...

Aquicultura: manejo e aproveitamento de efluentes. Infoteca-e
SILVA, M. S. G. M. e; LOSEKANN, M. E.; HISANO, H..

Nicolas, Jean-louis; Joubert, M.
Bacteria associated with semi-continuous culture of Brachionus plicatilis , which is used as the first food of marine fish larvae, were counted on Zobell 2216 E medium and identified. The numbers of bacteria were very high in both Brachionus (about 10 super(11) bact. per ml of digestive content) and in water (from 1.6.10 super(6) to 4.7.10 super(7) bact. per ml). The cultures were studied at driving a time when mortalities occurred frequently. The introduction of a Pseudomonas) phenon at a proportion of about 50% to the dominant microflora persisted in time and was little influenced by diet. It has been the cause of the repression of the Vibrio, Aeromonas group which was found in an unusually small proportion. It induced a lack of microflora diversity and...

Bacteries ichtyopathogenes en mariculture ArchiMer
Vigneulle, Martine.
Bacterial infections occurred during the development of marine fish farming of species such as turbot, sea-bass, sea-bream or salmon and trout. The main-specific bacteria involved in these diseases observed belong to 3 groups: the Vibrionaceae for Vibrio anguillarum (type 408) and Aeromonas salmonicida , the causative agents of respectively vibriosis and furinculosis; the Corynebacteriaceae for Renibacterium salmoninarum , responsible for bacterial kidney disease (BKD), the Enterobacteriaceae for Yersinia ruckeri , the causative agent of enteric redmouth disease. The clinical signs typical of those diseases always depend on the rearing and environmental conditions. The losses resulting from these bacterial diseases and the persistence of the bacteria in...

Bioenergética del besugo Pagrus pagrus. OceanDocs
Aristizabal, E.O..
The utilization of the energy of food by red porgy (Pagrus pagrus Linnaeus, 1758) from the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) was studied. From the energetic point of view, it is proposed that the strategy of patitioning, utilization and storage of the energy of food, is an indicator of the organism response to the environmental conditions. The main objective was to know the proportion of the energy of food derived to the different components of the bioenergetics budget. In order to estimate the monthly energy investment in reproductive growth, chemical analysis of gonads from fishes caught by the fishery fleet and from laboratory studies were performed. Two indexes were used to calculate the energy investment in female ovaries: the proportion of net daily energy...

Biología reproductiva del lenguado Paralichthys orbignyanus: Maduración y potencial reproductivo en ejemplares cultivados y salvajes OceanDocs
Radonic, M..
Intensive culture of teleost fish introduces changes over the environmental conditions found in their spawning grounds, leading to reproductive dysfunctions. The manipulation of these parameters (photoperiod, temperature) represents a common technique to alter the reproductive rhythms and enhance the spawnings in terms of quality and quantity. Nevertheless, for each species some modifications or adjustments have to be done according to their reproductive strategies. The advantages of manipulating those parameters are primarily to schedule the spawning for a desired period of time and to obtain good quality and quantity eggs. Many factors such as tank dimension, light intensity, nutritional status and husbandry of broodfish and minimum stress level have...

Broodstock management and induced spawning of flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus (Valenciennes, 1839)under a closed recirculated system OceanDocs
Bambill, G.A.; Oka, M.; Radonic, M.; López, A.V.; Müller, M.I.; Boccanfuso, J.; Bianca, F..
The present study was conducted to determine the parameters regulating spawning performance of P. orbignyanus wild broodstock. The adaptation to captivity was successfully achieved with minimal stress levels. In three consecutive spawning seasons, the annual photothermal manipulation was not effective for the maturation and natural spawning of females although males were running. Females were HCG injected, releasing non fertilized eggs. Artificial fertilization was carried out after stripping the fish with a total production of 18,000 fertilized eggs in 2001 (egg diameter=800±10 µm), 55,300 in 2002 (egg diameter= 850±12 µm)and 1,635,000 fertilized eggs in 2003 (egg diameter 818.4 ±30.08 µm, oil drop 98.1 ±2.96 µm). Calcium-free and low-calcium water production for aquaculture research - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v33i1.10686 Animal Sciences
Pinheiro, Paloma Damasceno; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Cavalcante, Davi de Holanda; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Moraes, Manuella Gazzineo de; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; Universidade Federal do Ceará.
The present work aimed to obtain a mathematical expression to calculate the amount of EDTA required to produce calcium-free and low-calcium water ([Ca2+] < 5 mg L-1). Initially, a pilot test was carried out to confirm the effectiveness of EDTA as a chelating agent of waterborne calcium and to evaluate its effect on water pH. Five application rates of Na-EDTA (25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 mg L-1) were tested. The concentration of calcium in water was determined initially (before the application of EDTA) and after one hour. Linear regression analysis was performed to find out the relationship between the desired calcium concentration in water and the required EDTA: initial calcium hardness ratio. The expression ŷ = -0.0911x + 3.3628 (R² = 0.933) was derived...

Can a small change in the tilapia’s on-going feeding strategy impair its growth? - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v35i3.18290 Animal Sciences
Caldini, Nayara Nunes; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Pereira, Nayagra Vidal; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Rebouças, Vanessa Tomaz; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; UFC.
The aim of the present work was to answer the following question: can a small change in the tilapia’s on-going feeding strategy impair its growth? In the initial phase of the study, fish were evenly distributed and maintained for two weeks in four tanks. In tanks 1 and 2, the ration was given in three equal meals at 8, 12 and 16h or at 9, 13 and 17h, respectively. In tanks 3 and 4, there was only one daily meal at 9 or 10 o’clock, respectively. In the second 8-week phase, fish from tank 1 were distributed into two groups in ten 100-L tanks: the 8-12-16 group, in which fish were always fed at 8, 12 and 16h; and the 8-12-16/9-13-17 group, in which fish were fed at 8, 12 and 16h in the first four weeks and at 9, 13 and 17h in the last four weeks. López, A.V.; Bocanfusso, J.J..
Collection of microalgae strains and initial and intermediate production of Nannochloropsis oculata (Eustigmatophyceae) under controlled laboratory conditions. Microalgae, as primary producers of the marine trophic pyramid, make up the first link of the food chain in the aquatic environment. In aquaculture, they are the basis of the whole production of marine fish larvae food such as rotifera, copepods and artemias. Within the “Experimental Mariculture and Biology” Program, at the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), the culture technology of red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) and flounder (Paralichthys orbignyanus) that requires production of microalgae to obtain larvae and juveniles of both species is being developed. Cofeeding of phospholipids to turbot <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> L. larvae as a tool to reduce live food consumption OMA
Dhert, P.; González Félix, M.; Van Ryckeghem, K.; Geurden, I.; Thysen, F.; Lebegue, E.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The possible benefits of feeding a formulated diet, together with <i>Artemia</i> , to first-feeding turbot larvae were investigated. Five dietary regimes were used: control ( <i>Artemia</i> only), cofeeding with a diet rich in phospholipid (PL) from bovine brain, cofeeding with a diet rich in free fatty acids (FFA) from the same source, cofeeding with a commercial diet (Lansy A2), and a formulated feed only (PL-rich diet). All treatments with artificial diets and the control treatment that received <i>Artemia</i> exclusively gave a similar survival rate of the fish at day 29. Cofeeding with artificial diets resulted in a lower growth rate than the control treatment. Cofeeding the larvae with PL-rich or FFA-rich diets did...
